Deciding what to wear during your photo session can be as difficult as choosing the right photographer for you and your family with pressure as your photographs from your session are going to be displayed on your walls and cherished for many years to come. It can be quite overwhelming selecting the right outfit for you and your family; we want to help you have a stress-free lead up to your session so that you can enjoy the whole experience.
1. Co-ordinating colours
Some parents prefer having matching outfits, and you can use different fabrics and styles to keep things interesting. When not opting for the matching look – choose colours in the same colour pallet or tones, such as different shades of creams, grays or browns. Softer neutrals and pastels always photograph beautifully.
2. Wear something comfortable
There is nothing worse than wearing an outfit that is uncomfortable, now I am not suggesting you wear your lounge around the house clothes, but when you wear clothes that aren’t comfortable, it can show stiffness in your photos, and make it difficult to pose and relax.
3. Keep it simple
Don’t over complicate choosing outfits. Having the whole family in jeans and a lovely top in your chosen colour tone can work well, and provides a simple, classic style for your session.
4. Limit patterns & add textures
While having patterns can be a nice addition to create interest in your photographs, we don’t want to create a distraction from the primary focus, your family.
Personally, I recommend keeping bold patterns to a minimum and logo’s should be avoided to give you a timeless look.
When wearing the same colours, textures and layers can provide a beautiful way to compliment and add a little extra touch of style to make your portrait special. Cardigans and blazers can be the perfect accessory. Lace or knits are beautiful for little girls or as an accent for women.
5. Plan ahead
Don’t leave selecting what you’re going to wear to the last minute, begin planning what you’ll wear when you book your session and have it all ready a week or a few days before your session. You don’t want to get to the day of or the day before to find out the outfit you had in mind for your child to wear isn’t clean or doesn’t fit.
6. Lay it out on the bed
By simply laying each outfit out on the bed you’ll be able to see straight away if your chosen outfits will work well together or if anything clashes or doesn’t look quite right.
I hope these tips help you to choosing the perfect outfit for your session, if you are still unsure, please don’t hesitate to bring a couple of options and I can help you pick the right ones at the beginning of your session when you arrive!
